SORÈZE Tarn, France.

The oppidum of Berniquaut, on a spur of the Montagne Noire, dominates the plain of Sorèze and Revel from a height of 300 m. The site was a natural fortress. Investigations since 1967 have shown that the site was occupied throughout the Iron Age and until the beginning of our era. It was abandoned during the centuries of the Pax Romana, but was reoccupied in the 3d c. and remained in use throughout the early Middle Ages. Excavations have cleared a dry stone rampart (1.2-1.4 m thick) with bastion and postern. It was rebuilt several times; at present, it cannot be dated.
