LANSARGUES Canton of Mauguio, Hérault, France.

Prehistoric site at the locality called Camp Redon at the mouth of the Viredonne, a small coastal river which runs into the Étang de Mauguio at the point farthest N on the coast of the Gulf of Lion. This site on the lagoon coast of Languedoc consists of a small natural mound surrounded by a man-made canal. Preliminary explorations have indicated continuous occupation from the Middle Bronze Age to the Gallo-Roman period, and above all occupation during all of Iron Age I (numerous ceramics from the urnfield civilization). Exploration of the site, which in both topography and the artifacts of the older levels recalls the terramare of N Italy, is making an important contribution to our knowledge of the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc, which was more heavily inhabited during the last millennium B.C. than was formerly realized.
